WP1_Simulation of design and execution

Purpose

The purpose of WP1 is 1) to develop simulation tools to predict how the applied filling technique affects form filling, fibre orientation and dispersion based on the rheological properties of steel fibre reinforced SCC, 2) to develop simulation tools to predict the mechanical properties of the finished structure based on detailed material models and knowledge of material properties.

Research contents

Present project will extend and improve existing simulation tools to cover fibre reinforced SCC. In particular, the aim is to, through material modelling (related to WP2), relate flow processes and flow patterns to fibre orientation and fibre dispersion. Furthermore, models will be developed that identify risks of (fibre) separation based on flow process characteristics and the local geometry (distances between any conventional reinforcement bars, corners etc.). It will also to be examined whether the simulation tools can be used for high-strength concretes, as the area already holds extensive experience related to specific manufacturing processes.

With the emergence of advanced numerical design calculation methods based on the Finite Element Method (FEM), it is possible to explicitly include cracks and their extent in actual simulations of the mechanical behaviour of structures. In present project detailed fracture-mechanical models for fibre concrete will be combined with state-of-the-art FEM formulations (X-FEM), extended FEM) with a view to carrying out simulations of the behaviour of fibre reinforced concrete structures, considering the (fracture-mechanical) properties of the concrete, including spatial variations of these.
